Risk Factors
- Decrease in estrogen levels in women
- Smoking
- Overuse of alcohol
- Corticosteroid use
- Use of CNS drugs and SSRI’s increase fall risk
- Renal insufficiency
- RA
- Neoplastic conditions
- Low calcium intake
Prevalence:
- Prevalence increases with age
- More common in women than men
- Incidence of osteoporotic fractures is greater than the incidence of stroke, heart attack, and breast cancer combined
- 1 of every 5 men age 50 and over
- 1 of every 2 women age 50 and over
Signs and Symptoms:
- Decrease in bone mineral density
- Kyphosis
- Fracture that occurs more easily than expected
- Vertebral fracture
Outcome Measures:
- Dual energy x-ray
- SF-36
Treatment:
- Weight bearing exercise (walking, jogging, dancing) to improve bone mass 3-5x/week for 45 minutes
- Resistance training to improve bone mass 2-3x/week
- Falls prevention training
- Education on safety to prevent falls and fractures
