Medial Epicondylitis
- Description / Cause
- AKA Golfer’s elbow
- Pain over the medial epicondyle
- Caused by repetitive microtrauma from overuse
- Muscles commonly involved
- Pronator teres
- Flexor carpi radialis
- Others wrist flexors could be involved
- Prevalence / Risk factors
- Less common than lateral epicondylitis
- < 1% of general public
- But in sports 97% of all elbow injuries
- At risk ages are from 30-50 years old
- Risk factors
- Repetitive task demanding occupations
- Smoking
- Obesity
- Diabetes
- At risk sports
- Golf
- Throwing sports (ig baseball)
- Signs / Symptoms
- 4 stages of Medial epicondylitis
- 1) early inflammatory reactions
- 2) angiobibroblastic degeration
- 3) structural failure leading to
- 4) fibrosis or calcifications
- Pain and weakness gripping
- Tenderness to palpation over medial epicondyle
- Swelling and ecchymosis is not typically present
- Hx of repetitive wrist flexion and forearm pronation
